Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome and one of the most famous fountains in the world. The central figure of the fountain is The God of the Sea, Neptune, riding in a sea shell chariot that is pulled by one calm home and one forceful horse, representing the push and pull of the ocean tides. The water that flows through the Trevi Fountain comes from an ancient aqueduct, built in 19 B.C., that supplies water from Salone Springs. Built in 1762, the theme of the Trevi Fountain reaches deep into mythology to pay tribute to the oceans with a cast of mythical characters adorning the fountain. The legend of Trevi Fountain states if a visitor throws a coin over their shoulder into the water, their return to Rome is guaranteed.
Pantheon
Considered one of the most sacred structures in Rome, the ancient temple of Pantheon dates back to 25 A.D. and is in remarkably great condition. The Pantheon is a historic marvel of architecture which includes a dome with a span of 142 feet (43.2 meters), 16 monolithic Corinthian columns, and ancient bronze doors weighing 20 tons that were originally covered in gold. Natural light streams into the temple through the 27 foot oculus in the center of the dome. The main altar is home to the he original 7th-century icon of the Madonna and Child. There is an inscription inside the temple that reads M•AGRIPPA•L•F•COS•TERTIUM•FECIT, which means “Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, during his third consulate, built this.”
La Bocca della Verità – Mouth of Truth
Resting in the vestibule of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Mouth of Truth challenges the truthfulness of all comers. The Mouth of Truth is a round flat sculpture carved from Pavonazzetto marble of a male face with wide eyes and an open mouth, which serves as an ancient lie detector. The belief is if a person inserts their hand into the mouth and tells a lie, the Mouth of Truth will bite off the hand. Take any of the flights to rome and challenge the Mouth of Truth, if you dare.
